Some say that rock is dead, but I disagree. There are too many iconic rock bands to talk about in just one issue of The Puyallup Post. Whether it is due to their talent, innovation or tragedy, some bands will live in our hearts and stereos forever.
After 40 years and more than 20 albums, KISS continues to be a prominent name in the rock world and will continue to be for years to come. They have sold over 100 million albums worldwide. Their painted faces and use of fire and blood in their live shows was a shock to the system in the ‘70s.
KISS is legendary because they were the first band to turn themselves into a brand. Merchandise was a huge part of the band’s success. Fans can buy anything from KISS shirts, alarm clocks to lunch boxes. Guitarist Gene Simmons even had his own reality show on A&E for many seasons. It has been said that KISS makes everything these days except music. This may be true, but it’s working for them as they are keeping themselves known and still tour. KISS is a band that many generations have enjoyed and for that, their music will never die.
One word: grunge.
Nirvana brought grunge music to the mainstream and was one of the bands that helped Seattle become known for its musical talent. Lead singer Kurt Cobain’s hectic relationship with wife, Courtney Love, along with his death at the age of 27 put the band in the media spotlight. Whether it’s due to Cobain’s sudden death or the band’s actual talent, Nirvana has sold over 75 million albums worldwide. They’re one of the best-selling bands of all time and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.
Joan Jett is known for being one of rock’s most important women. She helped pave the way for women in the world of rock music during the ‘80s.
The Blackhearts are most famous for their song I Love Rock and Roll. Their music has been featured in many places, including the TV show Freaks and Geeks and movies such as Crossroads and 10 Things I Hate About You.
In 2003, Jett was named one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 greatest guitarists. She was one of only two women on the list. This past summer, Jett won Alternative Press Magazine’s Icon Award for her accomplishments in the music industry. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts were announced recently as 2015 nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
After forming in the ‘60s, Pink Floyd changed music forever. They used new methods of making music such as tape-loops, feedback and echo delay to make music that was like nothing else out there at the time. Pink Floyd has sold over 250 million records worldwide. In 1996, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their music still plays on radio stations all over the country. The music of Pink Floyd also can be heard during the Pink Floyd Laser Spectacular, a laser light show that currently tours and uses the music of Pink Floyd. After a 20-year break, Pink Floyd reunited in 2014 and released a new album on Nov. 10 titled The Endless River.
The Beatles were the heartthrobs of the ‘60s.
They were the first in the wave of bands that became known as the British Invasion. Nicknamed The Fab Four, their music swept across America, producing frenzy like no one had ever seen. The term ‘Beatle mania’ was used to describe The Beatles mass popularity. Crowds of screaming and crying girls would follow them wherever they went.
Even though today we may think The Beatles were relatively tame, during the height of their popularity they were considered rebels. Their hairstyles became a main point of media attention and were considered long by 1960s standards. As Beatle mania swept the country, their hairstyle became known as the mop-top and was soon a popular hairstyle among men.
The Beatles are truly a band who will never die. The Abbey Road album cover has become an iconic image.
They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
According to the Recording Industry Association of America, The Beatles are the top-selling artists in the U.S., selling more than 178 million units.
Metallica has been described as the epitome of heavy metal music. Their style of fast, heavy guitar playing is something that many bands have tried to replicate during the years. Metallica has sold over 120 million records worldwide, making them one of the most commercially successful bands around. In 2009 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
And who could forget the incident with Napster? Metallica was the first band to sue a file-sharing website for copyright infringement and bringing forth an issue that is still a battle for musicians today.
Metallica has continually adapted their sound over years. This has allowed them to stay current in the rock world and reach larger audiences.
If they don’t live on for their musical talent, at least they will always be remembered as the band that shut down Napster.
